Renault has granted David Coulthard the opportunity to use their engine on his Red Bull for the third consecutive time this weekend for the Hungarian Grand Prix. The French team has been powering the Red Bull team for some time now.
From now on, the rule is as follows: One engine for two races. Renault has chosen to extend the use of Coulthard’s engine for another Grand Prix in order to help Red Bull with its strategy for the remainder of the season.
This means that the Scotsman will be out of sync with his teammate Mark Webber, but it ensures that he will use another engine in Belgium and Italy, two of the most challenging races on the calendar.
Fabrice Lom, engine engineer at Renault for Red Bull Racing, stated: First of all, its V8 engine didn’t work too much. Therefore, we are not particularly concerned about its reliability.
« Moreover, having two drivers who are not on the same cycle will allow us not to put all our eggs in one basket! This decision will also help us in the second half of the season in terms of logistics. »
« And finally, this means that David Coulthard will not have to use the same engine at Spa and Monza, which are two particularly challenging events. »
