Ron Dennis denies that Heikki Kovalainen is present at McLaren solely as support for Lewis Hamilton with the aim of him obtaining the world champion title this season.
The McLaren boss responded to the observations made this weekend by Sir Jackie Stewart when he claimed otherwise.
Dennis explains his point of view: « I have a lot of respect for Sir Jackie, he is a man of Grand Prix and he is a great champion. We are always willing to accept constructive criticism. Britain’s affection for Lewis is immense, and everyone is eager to give him the best advice. »
« But the fact is that Sir Jackie retired from racing in 1973, which is 35 years ago, and motorsport has evolved since then. His words suggesting Lewis could become world champion with Heikki’s assistance are simply false, » said Dennis.
« The truth is that Lewis doesn’t need additional help. He and Heikki are good buddies, but they are both very competitive drivers. They make their own decisions. »
Dennis also reiterated his position that McLaren will continue to give both of its drivers equal status.
« We have behind us a past that advocates equal treatment and opportunities for our two drivers. This is not about to change, » he added.
