Lewis Hamilton apologized to Kimi Räikkönen for crashing into him on the pit straight, causing both drivers to retire.
Räikkönen was stopped at the red light at the end of the pit straight waiting for it to turn green, and the Englishman crashed into the Ferrari of the 2007 World Champion. Retirement was then inevitable for both drivers.
Hamilton stated that he saw the red light when it was already too late.
« I saw Kubica and Räikkönen leave side by side in front of me, and then they suddenly braked. I saw the red light, but I didn’t have time to brake, it was too late. » said Hamilton after the race.
« I offer my sincerest apologies to Kimi. I know I ruined his race, but these kinds of things can happen. »
This accident nonetheless allowed Robert Kubica to claim his first victory in F1.
As the proverb says: Misfortune for some is happiness for others.
