The Formula 1 boss, Bernie Ecclestone, has called for the president of the FIA, Max Mosley, to voluntarily resign from his position by the end of this year. He states that Mosley can no longer fulfill his role following the sexual allegations made against him.
Mosley must face a vote of confidence from the FIA General Assembly next Tuesday. He claims that it is not necessary to step down despite the embarrassing revelations about his sexual habits in the British tabloids.
« Max could very well stay in his position after the vote, but a number of people, including clubs, want to see Max step down, » Ecclestone commented to the Telegraph.
« I don’t want to see that. I have been a friend of Max for 40 years. I wouldn’t like to see him in this situation after all he has done for the sport. »
Ecclestone revealed that there is growing dissatisfaction among those involved in F1 over the fact that Mosley did not resign of his own accord immediately after the revelations nearly two months ago.
Since this story broke, I have been under considerable pressure from Formula 1 investors, sponsors, and manufacturers on this issue.
« Max is a strong man. Once he makes a decision, he sticks to it. He believes there is still important work to be done at the FIA. However, in my opinion, he should retire no later than the end of the year with the FIA General Assembly in November. I would be happy to sit by his side to help him achieve this goal, » he continued.
« The big problem is that he can no longer represent the FIA because of these incidents. People wouldn’t be comfortable when talking to him. »
Max is being punished for the wrong reasons. He did an excellent job as president. Like all of us, he made some mistakes, but 90% of the decisions made were for the benefit of everyone. He deserves to be remembered for his work.
« That is why he should announce his decision to resign now and not go through a vote of confidence, » Ecclestone concluded.
