Adrian Sutil was described as the hero of the Monaco Grand Prix by his director, Colin Kolles, as he was on the verge of achieving the team’s best performance in the F1 championship.
Sutil was in 4th place before Kimi Räikkönen came and collided with him a few laps before the end of the race. Retirement was inevitable…
Despite tears and immense grief, Kolles admits that his driver is a rising star in his field.
« After the race, he was in tears, not just him but many other people. I told him: ‘You are the hero of the race.’ That’s my opinion and I believe people know it, » said Kolles.
This performance in Monaco for Sutil came at the best time as doubts had been raised following his difficult start to the season.
However, Kolles insists on the fact that the team has never been concerned about its poor performances in the first races.
« He has always had the support of the team and mine personally, there is no uncertainty. »
« Monaco is his favorite circuit, if the conditions were with us, something special could happen. And we were very, very close to that something special! » He continued.
When asked if he thought that Monaco’s performance could serve as a springboard for improved results in the future, Kolles stated: « Oh yes, of course. Obviously, we need to work on a better car. We cannot hope for every race to be wet. »
« We still have Canada, which could potentially be a great race, we have Spa, and we have Fuji. »
Kolles also refused to criticize Räikkönen for losing control of his car.
« I don’t want to criticize Kimi. He made a mistake, it’s a racing incident. It’s unfortunate that it’s Kimi, who is a friend. But, that’s life! »
