Jamie Green took advantage of a problem with the pole man’s car, Timo Scheider, to control the race in Mugello and thereby allow Mercedes to secure its first victory of the season.
The British driver led throughout the race after taking the lead at turn 1, while behind him, Paul di Resta finished 2nd, enabling Mercedes to achieve a one-two finish.
The Scotsman stayed in the shadow of his teammate but was never close enough to attempt an overtaking maneuver.
Tom Kristensen took third place while Bernd Schneider remains just off the podium.
Oliver Jarvis was the best driver with a single-seater that was not designed this year. The British driver benefited from a good first lap to ultimately establish a solid fifth place.
Several drivers lost control of their cars in the first turn, including Mike Rockenfeller, who was involved in an accident with Martin Tomczyk and Bruno Spengler. In the end, none of them made it into the points.
Mattias Ekstrom spent the second half of the race trying to maintain his position with his 2007 version Audi. It was therefore a difficult afternoon for the reigning world champion who finished in 6th place ahead of Markus Winkelhock in 7th and Alexandre Premat in 8th, who is the last driver to score points.
In the standings, Scheider is still the leader even with his 10th place in Italy. However, the German driver now has only a one-point lead over Green.
