Winner of the last race at Oschersleben, Timo Scheider, clinched pole position for the third race of the season, which will take place tomorrow at Mugello in Italy.
The German overtook Jamie Green, who was the only Mercedes driver able to challenge the hegemony of the Audi drivers. Green was still three tenths slower than Timo Scheider but was two hundredths faster than the third man, Tom Kristensen.
It’s the second consecutive pole position for Timo Scheider, and the eighth consecutive pole for Audi. However, the outlook seems to be improving for Mercedes as all four 2008 Mercedes entered the final part of the qualifying session.
Mattias Ekström, who showed good form during the morning practice, is fourth on the starting grid. The Swede suffered from tire problems in qualifying. Worse, his teammate Martin Tomczyk had a disastrous session with only the twelfth fastest time.
Markus Winkelhock was the only driver of a 2007 car to make it to the last part of qualifying. He will start from 8th place. Ralf Schumacher was the fastest man in a 2007 version Mercedes as Gary Paffett could only manage 15th place after a small off-track excursion.
