For the DTM to adopt new rules, a new manufacturer is necessary. Currently, Audi, Mercedes, BMW, Citroën/Peugeot, and Toyota are in discussions with RTI, the DTM promoter.

The new regulations would be moving towards a common aerodynamic base identical for all manufacturers with increasingly smaller wings, and parts that are less and less expensive.

Finally, hybrid engines could make their appearance with a view to respecting the environment.

These new rules could come into effect, at the earliest, in 2010.
