Renault is still searching for the cause of Alonso’s crash

Fernando Alonso achieved Renault’s best qualifying performance in two years this weekend in Barcelona.

The Spaniard qualified on the front row and would no doubt have finished in the top 5 on Sunday if a sudden failure of the RS28 engine hadn’t prematurely ended the race.

Rob White, the engine manager at Renault, stated this morning that the team had started a detailed analysis to find the source of the problem. In fact, they have not yet found it: according to Renault, the failure was not even predictable. No reason to panic, according to White:

« There was no way to prevent Alonso’s engine failure… We must now solve this problem with rigor and a strong response to avoid repeating this disappointment… »

Denis Chevrier, the team director, also admitted his powerlessness and surprise at the time of the technical incident: « You know, it’s a sudden failure. We could have been worried half a lap earlier, but at that moment, we couldn’t do anything. »

The RS28 used had a number of kilometers well below the capacity of a classic engine. This is a problem that we must no longer encounter on our path. The only question we need to resolve now is to ensure our reliability in the future. Concluded the Frenchman.
