Toro Rosso was originally supposed to present their new 2008 car, the STR03, during the Turkish Grand Prix weekend on May 9, 10, and 11. However, with a slight delay in the preliminary schedule, the team will only decide next weekend whether the SRT03 will arrive or not.
The delay in the presentation of the new Toro Rosso, which is set to replace the aging and increasingly struggling STR02, was mainly caused by Sébastien Bourdais’s accident last week in Barcelona during private testing.
The French driver severely damaged the single-seater, and with missing spare parts, few laps could be completed.
« We would like to put the single-seater for Istanbul, but with last week’s accident, we had a delay and as a result, we are far from the performances we were able to have at the start of the season… » Commented this morning Gerhard Berger, co-owner of Toro Rosso.
The logic of things would then suggest seeing the STR03 debut at the next Grand Prix. However, given the challenges and damages the drivers face on the Monte Carlo circuit, it is much more likely to wait for the Canadian GP to finally see the new Toro Rosso in action.
In Monaco, without a spare part, if we break down at the beginning of the weekend, we might risk not being able to present a single-seater for the race! That’s the whole difficulty of the choice we have to make…
« On the other hand, in Canada, we would have no trouble getting all the parts and the STR03 mule (spare) but that’s the most pessimistic scenario… We will make our choice next weekend! »
