Sébastien Loeb, who had regained the lead in the Jordan Rally, collided with Conrad Rautenbach’s car during the liaison route between the 11th and 12th stages.
The reigning world champion had taken the lead over his Citroën teammate, Dani Sordo, after the first three stages of the day.
The two Citroëns could not avoid each other at a blind corner and the accident was inevitable.
No injuries are to be reported among the two crews, but the cars are too damaged to continue the race.
This accident allows Sordo to retake the lead of the Jordan Rally but has only a 0.4-second lead over Latvala for Ford.
