Mark Webber believes that the scandal concerning FIA president Max Mosley discredits the sport.
The Red Bull driver even wonders if Mosley is in a position to fulfill his role, given the allegations made worldwide last month.
While he was criticized by former drivers, several national automotive associations, and four Formula 1 car manufacturers, the current drivers did not want to comment on the issue. Only a handful of them made very brief remarks on the subject in Bahrain two weeks ago.
Webber is now part of this minority, stating to BBC Sport that motorsport cannot afford this kind of negative publicity.
« I am not willing to comment specifically on the facts of Mosley, but what concerns me is that this scandal completely discredits our sport, » the Australian said.
« Formula 1 is the flagship sport in the automotive field. We all got involved to make it happen, and whether people like it or not, we are role models. »
« Whether Max chooses to resign on his own or the vote on June 3 relieves him of his duties, my point of view is that Formula 1 simply should not endure this type of scandal. »
Mosley intends to continue his duties as FIA president and maintains that his private behavior should not impact his role.
« I believe that the situation becomes very difficult to manage when one of these scandals becomes public. It will be much more difficult for him to do his job, » he continued.
Finally, the only Australian driver added that he was not at all surprised by the low number of comments made so far in the paddocks about Mosley’s situation.
« I think everyone is waiting for the extraordinary meeting. I am sure that after June 3rd, we will have more reactions. »
