While the main interest of the Middle Eastern event will be the battle for the drivers’ and constructors’ championships, a Jordanian woman is going to make history.
Abir Batikhi has become the first woman from the Middle East to regularly participate in a regional championship in this past decade. On the occasion of the first Jordan Rally, she will be the first Arab woman to tackle the stages of the world championship.
« This is going to become a memorable occasion. I want to do it for all the Arab women in the region », declares Batikhi, who has become one of the most popular drivers in the kingdom and is expected to attract many supporters.
« I hope to break some stereotypes by participating in this rally. I want to show that we are as important as men and that we have a role to play in society. »
Batikhi participated in the Jordan Rally Championship since 2002. She won the Group N classification in 2002 and 2003 and then Group A between 2004 and 2006. In 2007, she finished fifth in the championship.
Batikhi and his co-driver Mike Haddad, also Jordanian, will be driving a Subaru Impreza Group N in the international event that will begin on April 24.
