Even though all eyes are on Robert Kubica with his third place finish at the Bahrain Grand Prix, Nick Heidfeld also delivered a remarkable performance as the German secured fourth position behind his teammate.
The driver describes his impressions after the first three races of the season and is eagerly looking forward to the first European Grand Prix.
Last weekend, after struggling to find the right settings for his F1.08 during free practice sessions, Heidfeld improved day by day. In qualifying, he finished in sixth position on the starting grid and then went on to have a strong race.
« It was a difficult weekend for me. Fourth place is a completely acceptable result, » commented Heidfeld on his performance in Bahrain.
« We were faster than McLaren. Only the Ferraris were ahead by being slightly faster. »
At the end of the Sakhir race, Nick Heidfeld was rewarded for his efforts as, at just 30 years old, he is currently second in the drivers’ championship.
His fourth place also helped BMW-Sauber become the leader of the constructors’ championship for the very first time in its history.
The German is certain that his team can do just as well at the Spanish Grand Prix on April 27: « I am extremely proud of our place in the team standings. I am sure that our engineers in Munich and Hinwil will use this time until the race in Barcelona to develop our potential. »
