Romain Grosjean just won his first title last weekend in GP2 Asia. It is his second consecutive title after winning in F3 Euroseries last year, but he does not believe he can do as well in GP2 Series.

The Frenchman, originally from Switzerland, had won the F3 championship with more than 20 points over his closest rival. In his first GP2 season, the 21-year-old clinches the title a weekend before the end of the Asian championship. There are indeed two races left, which will take place starting Saturday in Dubai.

Despite this extraordinary record for such a young driver, the Frenchman does not see himself winning the GP2 Series, which grants direct access to Formula 1.

« I will respond with caution because that will not be the case… »,” said Grosjean when asked if he can repeat his feat in the main series, which begins in Spain in less than three weeks.

« Our primary objective is to develop the new GP2 car. This will be our main task at the beginning of the season. Additionally, there will be much tougher competition than in the Asian series in my opinion. Especially with drivers like Senna, Valles, Petrov, and Chandhok.

« Many of them can win the title. It will be a completely different environment. Once again, I will be a rookie with a lot to learn, starting with the tracks… With the Asia series, I gained valuable experience, but I am still finishing my ‘apprenticeship’ », continues the winner of the first race in Bahrain, last Saturday.

Although he won the first race, the Franco-Swiss driver had to retire in the second one, while still having the time to show yet again a beautiful comeback. This retirement, combined with the one from his closest rival in the championship, allowed him to still win the title. Grosjean expressed disappointment at not having won with more ‘style.’

« I was declared champion, even though I had to withdraw from the sprint race. You always prefer to win a title through a victory, and it would have only strengthened our motivation for the main series. »

« We also need to stay focused on GP2 Asia. The championship isn’t over, and we want to win the last race of the season. »
