The start of the season for the Bavarian team is impressive; they even seem capable of threatening Ferrari in the championship. However, BMW Motorsport director Mario Theissen prefers to wait for the Spanish Grand Prix to assess his team’s true capabilities.
The German believes that the improvements the teams will bring to their cars will help to establish a clearer hierarchy among the top three teams.
The next race in Barcelona will be quite interesting for two reasons. The track is very indicative of what we will see for the rest of the season, and on the other hand, each team will have a new package for this race. So after Barcelona, we will be able to say where we really are.
Theissen also prefers to make things clear, namely that the battle will not be just between his team and Ferrari, as McLaren is still there.
« I don’t think so. If we look at the first three races, no team has perfectly dominated the others. In Bahrain, McLaren-Mercedes were not in their place. Barcelona has always been a circuit that suits them, so let’s wait and see what happens there. »
This weekend, we were clearly faster than McLaren, so I would say it’s more of a fight between three leading teams. It depends on the track or your form over the weekend compared to the one in front, he added.
Even though there is reason to be optimistic for the rest of the season, Mario Theissen believes that the team cannot be completely satisfied because BMW’s major goal is to secure their first victory this season.
« This does not change our plans because it is still to win our first race this year and we have not achieved it yet.
