Max Mosley does not intend to resign from his position as FIA president, despite the scandal of his alleged sexual exploits revealed in a British tabloid.
The former world champion, Jody Scheckter said to the Guardian on Tuesday: « There is absolutely no doubt in my mind that Mosley should resign. »
« From a purely sporting point of view, we cannot afford to have someone like that at the head of an organization. »
However, sources close to Mosley have confirmed that he intends to continue his mandate. Furthermore, he is in discussion with his lawyers to file a lawsuit against the newspaper.
The extensive media coverage of this information could lead to the outright cancellation of his planned trip to Bahrain this weekend.
He had planned to attend the event with the royal family of Bahrain, but chose not to go in order to avoid any risk of confusion with anyone.
A spokesperson for the FIA stated that no decision has been made yet.
« We understand that Mr. Mosley, who had initially planned to attend the Bahrain race, is not currently available due to discussions with his lawyers. We cannot confirm his plans, » said the spokesperson.
The head of Formula 1, Bernie Ecclestone, for his part, suggested that it might be better if Mosley did not attend the race.
Speaking to the Times, Ecclestone said: « He shouldn’t go there. The problem is that he would draw all the journalists’ attention to himself. »
When asked whether or not Mosley should resign, Ecclestone added: « Max should do what he thinks is most right because it is up to him alone to make that decision, not the FIA. »
