The 28th edition of Rally Argentina began with the usual shakedown. In the rain, the final practice session was an opportunity for the Citroën Sport team to fine-tune the settings of their C4 WRCs. The morning was highlighted by the presence of Diego Maradona with the Citroën team. A true living god in Argentina, the former footballer took a ride in the C4, alongside Sébastien Loeb.
« The choice of the route and the conditions encountered this morning are a good introduction to what awaits us », commented Sébastien Loeb upon his return to the service park in Villa Carlos Paz. « This shakedown offered a variety of interesting challenges. The alternation of muddy sections and others less soaked allowed us to get a first idea of the behavior of our tires in these conditions. »
« It is certain that this will play a crucial role, » added Dani Sordo. « Depending on the timing and location of the showers, the condition of the road will change and we will have to adapt. It promises a difficult rally. »
As the shakedown was coming to an end, the atmosphere, already heated, was rising another notch with the arrival of Diego Maradona under the Citroën Sport structure. “Diego, Diego Diego…” chanted the crowd gathered in front of the Double Chevron installations while photographers and journalists rushed to capture the event. After a brief discussion with the crews, “El Pibe de Oro,” visibly impatient, donned a Citroën suit and settled into the seat usually occupied by Daniel Elena.
Upon his return, his smile was unmistakable. “It was a fabulous experience!” exclaimed the former footballer. “Sébastien really impressed me. His calm, his way of steering, shifting gears… everything is done smoothly and with total control, even though the path was muddy and it was raining. I’m up for another ride with Sébastien… however, I think I would be incapable of driving!”
Multiplying photos and handing out autographs, the star of “Mundial 86” made many happy among the numerous soccer fans within the Citroën Sport team present in Argentina.
