The organizers of the Malaysian Grand Prix are about to give the green light for their event to become a night race starting next year. This announcement follows a series of interviews with teams and drivers in Sepang last weekend.
The circuit has expressed a particular interest in being the second F1 event after Singapore to have drivers race at night. A firm and official decision will only be made after a number of discussions with key partners.
The 2008 edition of the Sepang Grand Prix, which took place last weekend, attracted 179,000 people over three days.
The general manager Datuk Azmi Murad told the New Strait Times: « After 10 years of success, we need to take on a new challenge, and a night race is the challenge we are looking for. All our efforts will now be focused on this. »
However, he clarified that there was no firm date for the first night race, but he hopes that it will take place in 2009.
« We are going to start working on the concept of a night race and if everything goes as planned, it will be for next year, » he explained.
