Gerhard Berger supported his team today by admitting he wants to stay with Toro Rosso, even if it changes ownership in the coming months.
Dietrich Mateschitz, the CEO of Red Bull, stated earlier this week that he had put the Toro Rosso team up for sale and wanted to reach an agreement before 2010.
Berger, who holds 50% of the Italian structure, explained that he understood Mateschitz’s decision, but the Austrian admitted that he would continue to be interested in Red Bull Racing’s B team, especially if the team were to improve before the sale.
« It is not a way for me to make money, but just a way to satisfy my passion. I have always loved Formula 1 and I want to stay in this environment, with the team if possible », said the former F1 driver upon his arrival in Malaysia.
« However, I do express a reservation because all of this is only conceivable if we find a strong partner and, above all, if the team is performing well… »
« I support all the decisions that Mateschitz may make since he has no intention of leaving the team in a bad state. He wants it to have a bright future, which is why I have no worries about our future. »
The situation is somewhat destabilizing for Toro Rosso at the moment, but Berger asserts that his team is strong enough to overcome the current challenges:
We are going to have to be strong and even if we cannot resist. But we want to face this takeover in the best possible way. It’s a problem, not the end of the world…
