Honda driver Rubens Barrichello was disqualified by the race stewards afterwards.
The Brazilian finished the race in 6th position, but visual evidence provided by Australian Television showed the veteran exiting the pits when it was not permitted, during the safety car period at the very end of the race.
The new regulation indeed provides for a lap time to be able to enter the pit after the safety car has entered the track. Barrichello allegedly did not comply and was penalized with a 10-second penalty for it.
He reportedly then left the pit lane, still under the same conditions and with the light on red…
It was the director of the Japanese team, Nick Fry, who confirmed the facts after the race.
This demotion benefits the drivers who finished behind the Brazilian. Thus, Nakajima and Bourdais earn an additional point to acquire 3 and 2 points respectively, while Räikkönen, classified 9th after his retirement, takes the point for 8th place.
