Fernando Alonso vs Lewis Hamilton, a battle that was the highlight of the 2007 season.
And for good reason, the duo did not hide their rivalry last season when they were teammates at McLaren. Alonso’s departure for Renault has taken this feud to another level.
The two protagonists downplayed this discord when they appeared together at a press conference in Melbourne.
Hamilton, who recently stated that he expected to experience a much more harmonious team now that Alonso has packed his bags, said it was an honor for him to work with the Spaniard in 2007 when asked jokingly if he would miss him!
« When I arrived at McLaren, Lewis had only been with the team for a few weeks and he was mainly a newcomer. He was constantly trying to impose his ideas, » commented Alonso.
« We must always learn lessons from everyone. We are no longer teammates, but we are still in the race together in different teams. »
The Iberian also spoke about the conditions of his arrival at Renault and especially what he currently thinks about this ‘homecoming’. Most of the faces are familiar to him, but he knows that things have changed since he left the team at the end of 2006.
« After having won the drivers’ and constructors’ titles two years in a row, I left in 2006 a team full of confidence, » he confessed.
« Now, she might be lacking a bit in confidence after achieving results far from those attained in 2005 and 2006. But I firmly believe that this team knows what it’s capable of. »
Alonso will make his grand return to racing for Renault on Sunday for the season opener, and he thinks his glory days might not be that far behind.
Renault has nothing to prove to anyone. So it’s just a matter of time; the team needs to optimize its work, and this should lead them to success.
« I think everyone is very motivated to recapture the taste of past successes. We all have the same goal, » concluded Fernando Alonso.
