Sébastien Bourdais thinks his arrival in F1 could have happened much earlier. He even goes as far as to say that he missed several racing seasons.
The 29-year-old Frenchman won four consecutive titles in Champ Car but is expected to find himself behind a number of young drivers who are attracting all the attention.
« At the end of 2005, I thought that my arrival in F1 would be a big surprise, and by the end of 2006, I considered that a career in F1 was something to forget. But a week after saying this, the opportunity to test for Scuderia Toro Rosso came to me, » explained Bourdais.
« The only real chance over the past few years was in 2002 with Arrows, which has since disappeared. It is difficult to have more than one chance in this discipline because each season a new generation of drivers arrives. You are really lucky if you manage to get another opportunity. I had that chance and I am finally present after many years. »
Bourdais thinks he has been overlooked in past seasons because the level of competition in Champ Car has not been evaluated and is not recognized by people in high places in F1.
« Each time I won a race or a championship, I had in mind that someone in F1 would contact me. »
At the time, I was focused on my work. But F1 is unpredictable, and it is not up to you to decide anything. You have to be patient and seize the opportunity when it presents itself to you, added the Toro Rosso driver.
