The McLaren team boss, Ron Dennis, has the full support of his main partner Mercedes, according to Norbert Haug, head of the German car manufacturer.
Rumors have spread over the past few weeks about Dennis’s future. The 60-year-old Briton is said to be increasingly eager to step down from his role as F1 team leader.
These rumors had also suggested some pressure from the partner Mercedes, which powers the McLaren, holding a 40% stake in the Formula 1 team.
But Haug insisted that Dennis has the full support of Mercedes and the Briton welcomed this gesture.
« I am currently in my 14th year of working with Ron, and during this entire period, only one other team has been more successful than ours, » said Haug to Bild magazine.
« As a team leader, Ron played a huge role in achieving this success. »
« All negative statements that may have appeared in the media are purely speculative and come from outside the factory. We are with Ron, and we want to continue working with him within the same management structure. »
Haug acknowledged that there were still ongoing discussions about the possibility of buying shares to become the majority owner in the team.
« The options for the company’s future development are constantly under review, » added Haug.
« But it is clear that we do not need to own more than 50% of the shares to make ourselves heard as much as we want. »
