The McLaren team deplores as manifestly inaccurate and misleading the statements made by the Italian police claiming to have found evidence that justifies the responsibility of certain team members in the espionage case.
Senior executives were questioned on Wednesday by Italian magistrates as part of the judicial investigation into the 2007 F1 scandal.
The police stated that they had found evidence that clearly highlights the responsibilities of certain high-ranking technicians in this case.
However, McLaren stated that the statement was misleading. Furthermore, the Italian police had access to materials from the McLaren Technology Centre and the various homes of senior executives.
« McLaren Racing wishes to express its extreme dissatisfaction with the issuance of this statement by the Italian police, » the British team said in a statement.
« If these reports reflect the statements to the police, the claim is inaccurate and misleading. »
« The reports incorrectly claim that certain evidence clearly shows the responsibility of certain individuals from McLaren Racing in this scandal. »
In fact, the Italian police have not yet had access to all the relevant material and have therefore not yet examined the documents attached to this material. We would be very surprised if these documents revealed anything that has not already been disclosed since the start of the investigation.
« McLaren Racing believes that legality must be respected and that the evolution of the investigation process should not be interpreted negatively or used for promotional purposes. »
« It should be noted that no comprehensive research or inquiry conducted to date has provided evidence of a possible disclosure of documents exchanged between Nigel Stepney of Ferrari and Michael Coughlan within McLaren Racing that may have been used on the single-seater. »
« McLaren Racing will continue to cooperate with the police on any potential searches and other investigations they may undertake. McLaren Racing would like to thank the Surrey police for their availability and courtesy with which they undertook the process, » concluded the Woking team.
