The organizers of the WRC Sweden rally, the second round of the WRC World Championship, have decided to pay a final tribute to Colin McRae.
The 1995 world rally champion with Subaru passed away at just 39 years old on September 15th during a helicopter crash. Many tributes have already been paid to him, but the world championship wanted to offer him one last tribute, worthy of the man he was.
To this end, in addition to a special stage that will bear his name, the Colin’s Crest », the organizers have also decided to create a McRae award that will be given to the winner of the longest jump on a ‘crest’ of the stage.
A spokesperson for the Swedish rally explained: « We never knew how far Colin McRae could jump. It was only in 2006 that we started measuring them and Hirvonen jumped 40.8 (the length of three buses). Last season, the conditions weren’t ideal for jumps, so the record still belongs to Hirvonen… but Colin had jumped much further. Unfortunately, we will never know how much. »
The prize will be awarded at the end of the rally, on Sunday, on the track of the final super-special in Karlstad trot.
