Gary Paffett has once again secured a position as a test driver with McLaren-Mercedes in Formula 1 a few days ago. The British driver will also have the DTM championship to occupy his season.
2nd in the German Touring Championship in 2004, Gary Paffett stopped in 2005 to resume this competition last year (2007), where he raced with a ‘previous’ 2006 Mercedes.
This 26-year-old driver has often fallen victim to mechanical problems this season. Nevertheless, he won the second race of the season – in Oschersleben. However, Paffett believes he can secure a seat in a 2008 Mercedes for this new year and attempt to win the title.
With Mikka Hakkinen’s retirement, only one spot is currently available. A spot rumored to be coveted by Ralf Schumacher but could well be assigned to the Briton. The decision lies with the Mercedes HWA team.
« My objective is entirely to drive in a recent car. » he commented yesterday to Autosport magazine. « I am paid to win races… »
« We have not really been chosen yet, but we have one foot in this seat and I really hope to start 2008 in a brand new Mercedes. I will therefore eagerly await the finalization of the contract. »
Paul di Resta is another direct competitor to Gary Paffett. He was tested last November by the team, but regardless of his car, the Briton is determined to fight for the title in 2008, unlike the 2004 and 2005 seasons where he gave up just a few points shy of the leaders.
« Winning a race last year was really great, but I clearly want to be in the fight for the championship, » he added.
« They start their trials in January, I hope that we will have the team’s decision soon, but for now, no date has been set. »
