BMW aims for its first victory this year!

BMW Sauber insists that its goal for 2008 is to win its first Grand Prix by building on its strong performance in 2007.

The team based in Switzerland has always been quite reluctant to set ambitious goals, but the director of BMW Motorsport, Mario Theissen, is this time very clear about the team’s ambitions for the new season.

« For 2008, we have set the goal of bridging the gap between the top teams and ‘the others’. Furthermore, we intend to win our first Grand Prix, » he stated on the official team website.

One of the two drivers, Nick Heidfeld, hopes that the battle between McLaren and Ferrari to win the world championship last year could help his team, BMW Sauber, to close the gap.

While Ferrari and McLaren had to battle until the last Grand Prix in Brazil for the title, BMW Sauber was able to shift its focus from the championship and concentrate on its 2008 cars well before the end of the season.

Written on his site during the Christmas holidays, Heidfeld stated that he hoped this factor would contribute in 2008, even though his team is well aware that nothing can be taken for granted in F1. See Heidfeld’s statements

Heidfeld also stated that the ban on traction control this year would have a significant impact on the races.

« I can’t wait to see what things will look like in 2008. For now, we are working. In recent years, we had traction control, which is why the starts were always quite predictable. Therefore, the next season will be even more interesting, » he added.

« The ban on anti-skid will make things more exciting. You will be able to make mistakes more easily, which should lead to more overtakes, especially when you are under pressure. »
