Giancarlo Fisichella is said to have accumulated 10 million euros from personal sponsors to boost his chances of being hired by the Force India team in 2008, some Spanish sources announced on Wednesday.
The sports daily Marca claims that the Roman, who will turn 35 next month, will soon find out if he has been selected by Vijay Mallya, co-owner of Force India, ex-Spyker, to become the second race driver in 2008 alongside Adrian Sutil.
Roldan Rodriguez, who appears to be Fisichella’s main competitor for the position to be filled, has reportedly accumulated, according to Marca, the same amount of personal sponsorship.
However, the Italian might have two more weapons than Rodriguez: Indeed, his first F1 season in 1997 was with Jordan, which is the predecessor of Force India. Moreover, the Indian team is still based in Silverstone, Great Britain. Fisichella knows Vijay Mallya well, and this could prove to be decisive…
He returned to Jordan in 2003, where he won his first Grand Prix and it was in Brazil, before shining with Renault in 2005 and 2006.
