McLaren gets rid of its old demons

Heikki Kovalainen firmly believes that his team McLaren-Mercedes will be able to overcome the espionage affair that ruined their 2007 season and move forward.

Dressed in a silver outfit in the colors of his new employer, the Finn specified that the 2007 scandal, and especially the apologies made to the FIA, left McLaren without any qualms for 2008.

« Before signing the contract, I, of course, asked questions and gathered information to understand their perspective, and all I know is that this matter will in no way affect our performance next year, » stated Kovalainen.

« I was not involved in this matter, and I do not know the details, so it is very difficult to comment on them. But for my part, and for McLaren too, the intention is to ensure the greatest possible clarity. We want these events to be behind us once and for all. »

« I think we can do it and that the team is in a position to move forward. That’s what needs to be done in the name of Formula 1. Of course, it’s a serious matter, and of course, we have people who lied to the FIA and to the team, I think we’ll be able to resolve the issue and move forward, » he stated.

Kovalainen added that his goal in 2008 was to do better than in 2007, where he achieved a single podium finish.

« It took a little while to finally reach this agreement, but of course, I am very happy to join McLaren. »

« It’s a new chapter in my young career and I will try to be even more successful and to have an even better year than the one I had with Renault. »

« But for the moment, it’s still very early. I need to get to know the team, I need to meet the people who will be around me, and prepare for my first race. But of course, I am very happy, » concluded Kovalainen.
