Mark Webber is optimistic about his 2008 season, another one with Red Bull. He is confident about the good form of his team for the upcoming season, however, the number 2 does not believe that his team will have the means to win races…
Coulthard’s teammate finished his 2007 season in 12th position in the championship, a few places behind the Scotsman, both being notably penalized by the Austrian team’s reliability, despite good performances overall.
« You know, I could give figures and guesses or even estimates to give you an idea of our standings in the championships next season… but it would be completely inappropriate… » He stated.
« Our best challenge would be to beat BMW, but everyone on the team is determined to improve. It will be a long and hard road, but if we have a reliable car there is no reason, however, it is still early to hope to win… »
Geoff Willis, the new engineer for the Red Bull brand, according to Webber, has the methods to bring reliability in 2008. He therefore believes he can achieve some podium finishes.
Regarding his season, the Australian comments: « Personally, I have been very satisfied with my own performance given the incidents I experienced in Montreal and Melbourne. Out of the 17 races in the season, I had 7 retirements, one ’caused by’ Sebastian Vettel and 6 others due to mechanical problems, » continues the former 31-year-old Williams driver.
« In 2007, reliability forced us to miss several podiums, but I am certain that Geoff Willis will be the missing link that will solve this issue… »
Despite increased speculation in recent weeks about Alonso’s future in F1, Mark Webber also admits he never doubted his place in the team in 2008.
« In fact, I was really relaxed during this period. I had gone to Tasmania for 10 days, so I was cut off from the world, and when I came back, everyone doubted my future, but nothing ever made me think that the team would want to part ways with me in 2007… even though it can happen quickly. » Concluded Webber.
