Néel Jani, who drives for A1 Team Switzerland this season in the A1 Grand Prix, believes that his problems in the pits during the first race cost him ten points in the standings.
Indeed, the Swiss driver had a 5-second lead over Narain Karthikeyan – winner of race 1 – before having to refuel. Unfortunately for him, the right rear wheel took more than 35 seconds instead of the usual 6 to be changed, costing him, by his estimation, the first place and thus 10 points.
The team would then be alone at the top with a 29-point lead in the championship instead of the current 19 over France, in second place.
« I should have won this race, » regretted the Swiss.
I had a period with more than five seconds of lead and then I only had to manage it. I just had to keep an eye on my brakes… but the stop took way too long.
« We are certainly still in the lead, but at the moment we could have taken a serious step towards the title… »
« In New Zealand, we will obviously continue to fight, but this time, without mistakes! » Warned Neel Jani.
The championship is currently on a ‘mid-season break’ and will resume in a month in Taupo, New Zealand, for the 5th round of the 2007-08 season.
