Etihad Airways has signed a three-year contract with the leaders of Formula 1 and the organizers of the 2009 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.
The airline, the leading aviation company in the United Arab Emirates, will therefore be the main sponsor of the GP that is still in the planning stage but already on the 2009 F1 calendar. It already sponsors the Spyker team, now Force India.
Bernie Ecclestone, the F1’s top financier, expressed his enthusiasm about this announcement: « Having a sponsor come forward like this nearly two years before the first GP in this country clearly shows the enormous potential and enthusiasm of the Middle East. »
The first Abu Dhabi Grand Prix race will be held on a 5.6-kilometer-long circuit, currently under construction on Yas Island.
The official site of the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix has set up a countdown for the event, representing the track’s inauguration date. The date is expected to be January 31, 2009 – although this has not yet been officially confirmed, it is only two months before the start of the season.
