Mark Webber gave his point of view this weekend on Alonso’s return to the team that allowed him to become a double world champion.
The Australian, also a former test driver for Renault, believes that Fernando Alonso’s future will be much brighter than his season with McLaren but also thinks he will struggle to win races…
« I don’t think it will allow him to achieve as many victories as he did this season… » Comments the Red Bull driver. « I also don’t think he can fight for the title until the final round… »
I’m sure that Renault will be better in 2008, they know how to bounce back. Alonso will also feel much better there… without a doubt… but I don’t think he will have as fruitful a year as 2007 in terms of victories or standings…
Webber, who shares his opinion, was impressed by the 2007 season, which was full of surprising events, each more astonishing than the last. He logically wonders how 2008 could be better…
« From a purely sporting point of view, this season was sensational,” he explained. « [Michael] Schumacher retired, [Fernando] Alonso was very good, and above all, no one expected to see [Lewis] Hamilton come and fight against Alonso and Räikkönen for the title. »
« In 2008, with the removal of traction control, we will lose a great advantage and take a step into the past… I wonder how people will understand this measure. »
The Australian was also surprised by more… judicial matters; « Unfortunately, the season wasn’t as simple as that… All his legal issues and all his penalties and fines are not good for the image of our sport… »
Webber has re-signed for an additional season with Red Bull Racing. At one point, he was threatened by Alonso in the team, but he remains sportsmanlike towards the Spaniard.
