The chances of a night race for the Australian Grand Prix have increased with the presentation to the FIA of plans for a revolutionary lighting system that could be used at Albert Park.
The Australian-based lighting company Hella has just experienced immense success during a secret night-time test held last month for their new reflector system.
This latest advancement by the company is said to be reliable, protected from any breakdowns, and it does not produce any shadows.
The test featured Mark Webber and former motorcycle world champion Mick Doohan. The results were submitted to the FIA for review.
If the innovative lighting system gets the green light from the FIA, then the company will likely be called upon for an Australian Grand Prix to be held at night.
The spokesperson for the company Hella Australia, Thomas Plessinger, told the Herald Sun newspaper: « We have demonstrated that it was possible to do it. That is the most important thing. »
A year ago, it was a dream, but now we know it is realistic. We have submitted our technical dossier to the FIA and are awaiting their response.
He added: « Our system is designed, developed, and manufactured in Australia. It is possible that we can illuminate all sports events, even an F1 race. »
« There are also chances for other sports. Every request will be examined very closely, but F1 would be the pinnacle, » he concluded.
