The leading Spanish insurance group, Mutua Madrileña, with over two million clients in the Iberian Peninsula, announced today that it has terminated its sponsorship contract with McLaren-Mercedes.
The Spanish firm that entered Formula 1 in the 2005 season with Renault – thanks to the presence of world champion Fernando Alonso – of the same nationality, had then decided to follow their champion to McLaren.
According to the statement sent to the British team, Alonso’s departure to Renault was by no means a reason for leaving, as the insurer’s decision was made well before, in last November.
Mutua Madrileña could however decide to continue its sponsorship in F1 and keep following Alonso at Renault, but the presence of ING – a direct competitor – is more than discouraging. It is therefore not yet known if this withdrawal from Formula 1 is definitive.
