Heikki Kovalainen, as we have known since Monday, will no longer be part of the Renault F1 Team crew in 2008.
The young Finn, despite the poor performances of the R27, managed to establish himself as a leader in the French team during a very impressive debut season with the diamond brand, succeeding in beating his much more experienced teammate, Giancarlo Fisichella, and reaching his first F1 podium at the eventful Grand Prix of Fuji.
At 26, the winner of the 2004 Race of Champions – ROC – nevertheless believes he was prepared for the choice made by Renault and Briatore.
According to him, indeed, Fernando Alonso’s return to the team that enabled him to win his two world titles required having a teammate with little experience, who would not overshadow the Iberian, as Hamilton did this season at McLaren.
It was therefore logical that one of the revelations of 2007 could not remain at Renault, at the risk of holding back the Spaniard.
« It was something we could predict, » he stated about the new Renault drivers on Finnish television channel MTV3.
« For some time now, we have chosen other options… » continued Kovalainen, « Renault made this decision, but fortunately for me, I still have two other very interesting offers available to me. » Concluded the Finn.
According to the latest rumors, Toyota could offer him the position currently held by Jarno Trulli, while the second and more likely option would come from McLaren-Mercedes, thus replacing Alonso.
