The head of the Renault team, Flavio Briatore, stated that the team has strengthened their structure with the aim of returning to the forefront in F1.
The team, world champion in 2005 and 2006, had a rather disappointing 2007 season, finishing on the podium only once and ending up in third place in the Constructors’ Championship following McLaren’s disqualification.
But Briatore, whose team confirmed yesterday the return of the double world champion, Fernando Alonso, claims to have already taken steps to get a little closer to the front row of the grid.
« We have strengthened our technical structure, added 30 million euros to our budget, and hired Alonso with the aim of winning races again in 2008, » Briatore told Gazzetta dello Sport.
Briatore is convinced that Alonso’s return will be a boost for Renault, as he evaluated the Spaniard as the number one, the best driver alongside Michael Schumacher. In fact, he makes fewer mistakes than Michael.
« Now we hope to be able to repeat our success. Fernando did not come back for the money. What matters here is the human aspect, » he concluded.
Alonso is back with Renault after a brief one-year stint with McLaren.
