Willy Webber, the race director of A1 Team Germany, believes that his team must focus on their 2007-2008 season and forget their setbacks during the last race – in Sepang – where the team was heavily penalized.
Mickael Ammermuller had indeed caused three collisions in the two weekend races. As a result, he received two penalties, which were somewhat late to appear, and the result became mediocre for Germany in Malaysia with only a 16th place in the sprint race, and a disqualification in the endurance race…
« I find that it gives a very negative image of the A1GP after sanctioning us for the sprint race long after it was over… » said Weber.
« I don’t understand why we received these penalties, especially since everyone was able to continue their race despite the collision… »
« This very severe sanction made us reflect nonetheless, and we have questioned ourselves… especially regarding our presence in this championship… » Continues the German, reigning champion with Germany in 2006/2007.
Ammermuller, a GP2 driver, was making his debut weekend with Germany in A1GP, but Weber, despite the controversy, wants to see this driver compete again for the rest of the season.
« Michael [Ammermuller] has my full support, », he confirmed. « I am delighted that he is part of our team, and above all, I hope that he will continue to be part of it. »
« It was the first time he ran for us after a test conducted over 15 months ago… so I am very satisfied with his result. » concluded Webber.
Germany started its season poorly. As a result, it is only in 11th place in the championship with 14 points after three of eleven rounds, compared to 61 points for the leader, Switzerland.
