The latest Alonso rumors

On Wednesday, McLaren denied being in talks with double world champion Fernando Alonso after rumors suggested a possible return of the Spaniard to the British team. A team he left only a month ago!

« McLaren is not in discussions with Fernando regarding his future in F1, » the team stated in a press release.

The Spanish sports daily AS indicated that their fellow countryman was in contact with McLaren-Mercedes. The driver, who has not yet announced his plans for 2008, has reportedly, according to the same source, negotiated a one-year contract on the same terms and conditions as the previous one.

However, Alonso reportedly insisted that McLaren commit in writing to various changes, including the possibility of following his own race strategy independently of his teammate Lewis Hamilton.

But even with these conditions, there was always the relational problem between the driver and Ron Dennis who remained the team boss.

McLaren is not yet able to announce a replacement for Alonso, following a season marred by the Ferrari-McLaren espionage affair. This cost the British team 100 million dollars in fines and the loss of all its points in the constructors’ championship.

Hamilton, 22, finished his season in second place ahead of Alonso, both behind Kimi Räikkönen in the Ferrari.
