Now young holders of four World Rally Championship titles for drivers and co-drivers, Sébastien Loeb and the Monegasque Daniel Elena equal the records of Juha Kankkunen and Tommi Mäkinen, as well as, on the French side, that of Alain Prost in Formula One.
The reaction, in hindsight, of the number 1 in three questions.
It’s the first time for the Alsatian that he had to wait until the last event of the season to win the World Championship title. Something that will leave an everlasting memory.
Was it your most difficult season?
It was certainly our most complicated victory. There were numerous duels with Marcus [Gronholm] from the start of the season. We took a lot of risks. We had to be on the edge all the time. Winning this championship is a great moment for the entire team and Guy [Frequelin], for whom it’s the last season. I am very happy.
Winning the championship like this, does it make it the sweetest victory?
« It was certainly the most contested. The one that means the most to me, I’m not sure. The first title remains an exceptional memory. It was a very great moment in Corsica with all my friends present. However, in the intensity of the competition and in sporting pleasure, this title comes first. »
Next year, Marcus Gronholm won’t be there anymore. Are you expecting a simpler season?
Yes, but we must not forget Mikko [Hirvonen] who is getting faster and faster. I’m sure it won’t be as easy as some claim.
« With Sordo and Latvala, I am sure there will be some great battles. »
