After the remarks from the F1 boss about him, Giancarlo Fisichella hit back hard by stating that it’s probably time for Bernie Ecclestone to hang up his boots and retire.
In an interview on the official F1 website earlier this week, Ecclestone said that Fisichella and Ralf Schumacher have accomplished some great things in recent years and that they should now seriously consider retirement from racing rather than joining Force India.
Ecclestone stated: « Both have been in teams for a very long time and now it is no longer possible to envisage better results in the future. »
« They should seriously consider whether it is reasonable to start from scratch in a much less competitive environment. Perhaps if these drivers end up changing teams, they will gradually wake up, » he added.
These comments have not deterred Fisichella, who claims he has indeed accomplished very impressive things over the past few years. But by participating in the Jerez tests next week for Force India, he demonstrates his passion for the practice of testing.
In response, the Italian wrote a letter addressed to Ecclestone:
« I read with interest your interview in Auto Moto und Sport, faithfully published on your own website. You are like a father to F1 and you talked about the drivers in that interview as if they were your children, including me, » said Fisichella.
« I wanted to remind you dear dad, I mean dear Bernie, that I am the one who won the first Grand Prix in Melbourne in 2005 with Renault, and therefore I was the one who made the R25 be considered a winning car. »
« Over the two seasons I spent alongside Alonso, I was in perfect harmony with my team’s strategies. I contributed to winning the two constructors’ titles in 2005 and 2006, finishing fourth in the drivers’ championship, just like Felipe Massa this year, » he continued.
Given these circumstances, I believe I couldn’t have done better. In 2007, Renault promised me a championship win, but that wasn’t the case and I didn’t collapse.
« Next week, in fact, I will bring my enthusiasm and experience to Force India, a young team that doesn’t have an old heart just like Giancarlo Fisichella, who still has a certain talent to show it! » Concluded the Italian.
