The Director of BMW Motorsport – Mario Theissen – thinks that despite Andy Priaulx’s title in WTCC, it was one of the most difficult seasons for the German team.
Priaulx had won a third consecutive title during the last of the two weekend races in Macau, but without being truly competitive. Yvan Muller with his Seat Leon TDi (Diesel) was indeed in a position to win this title before having to retire due to a fuel pump problem…
« It (Seat Leon) has certainly been the most competitive this season », admitted Theissen. « Furthermore, of the four automotive brands present this season, they have all won a victory… which was not the case in previous seasons. »
« We arrived in Macau with the aim of defending our position while trying to win the title, but we could clearly see that without a stroke of luck, we would not have been crowned… »
Theissen also wanted to add that Priaulx deserved to be applauded for his victory, somewhat against all odds.
Actually, with Andy [Priaulx], the tougher and narrower the road, the more he makes a difference, especially since he never gives up!
« Macau is never won until the checkered flag waves, but we won and our drivers took advantage of the opportunity they had… »
BMW was finally crowned for 6 points over Seat.
