The Belgian circuit of Zolder could host the WTCC (World Touring Car Championship) next season.
The director of the WTCC – Marcello Lotti – has indeed confirmed that the weekend scheduled to take place in Mexico in March 2008 has been canceled due to the track not being approved, as it is too dangerous. The calendar now only includes 11 meetings for the time being.
« We absolutely have the possibility to schedule a 12th meeting for 2008, and Zolder would be a very good circuit for our championship, » commented Lotti.
In fact, Zolder was the reserve circuit in case the Swedish races at Anderstop were not on the calendar, but the circuit has been confirmed and will indeed be present in 2008. Therefore, Zolder could replace Mexico for April 19-20, 2008, about ten days after the scheduled date for Mexico.
The WTCC has not returned to Belgium since 2005, when the weekend took place at Spa.
