Bruno Michel – director of the GP2 series – gave his perspective on the budget allocated for 2008, 2009, and 2010. He indeed believes that the amounts used by the teams for an entire season, despite an increase, will be quite beneficial for the well-being of the series.
A full season with a GP2 team costs on average about 1.4 million euros, but Mr. Michel believes that although the amount is significant, it is justified by the quality of the discipline, which is increasingly close to F1.
« We are still concerned about the cost factor, but we must keep in mind that a GP2 single-seater is technically very advanced », commented Michel.
« That’s exactly what we need to do if we want to attract the best teams and the best drivers. I also think that having around twenty races in the 2008 championship gives us a certain credibility… »
In just three years, the replacement discipline for the aging Formula 3 has succeeded in its mission. Providing the best drivers for Formula 1. With Nakajima, Glock, Rosberg, Hamilton, Kovalainen, etc., the championship has secured a place in motorsports.
« Thanks to the quality of our races, we were able to attract F1 teams. They showed interest in our drivers, and we can be satisfied with that. » Continued the Frenchman.
In 2008, the lineup will be the same as in 2007 in terms of teams. Many drivers will arrive, but the main measure is the arrival of the new GP2 single-seater. More efficient, it is the main cause of the increase in costs.
« We have done our best to limit cost increases while balancing performance and growing interest in the discipline. And with more and more interested drivers, we have succeeded. »
