Max Mosley, the president of the FIA, met with Serbian Prime Minister Vojislav Kostunica on Friday to discuss the construction of a modern circuit, reported the AFP news agency.
A statement released by Mr. Kostunica’s office, reported AFP, indicates that the construction of a circuit would have great importance on the development of motorsport in Serbia, tourism, and the country’s economy.
The meeting also focused on the F1 ambitions of Serbian driver Milos Pavlovic, who finished third this year in the Formula Renault championship, the statement added.
Bernie Ecclestone also met with the Prime Minister in Belgrade at the beginning of the year when he went to explore investment opportunities in Serbia.
After the so-called emerging countries such as India or China have become essential stops on the F1 calendar, it’s now the turn of Eastern European countries to want to establish themselves in the premier category of motorsports.
Serbia, having been part of the former Yugoslavia, is therefore one of these new countries that may potentially become future hosts of a Formula 1 Grand Prix.
