Michael Ammermuller will make his grand debut in the A1 Grand Prix during the third stage of the championship, in Malaysia, in less than two weeks.

The 21-year-old German will have to replace Christian Vietoris in the A1 Team Germany. The latter was indeed offered Formula 1 tests by BMW Sauber following his success in the Formula BMW championship this season.

“I’m thrilled to have a second chance with the German team,” said Ammermuller, who had already been tested by the team in 2006. “It’s an extra motivation to start with the reigning champion team.”

It’s a big challenge. Even though I’ve never been able to drive on this track, I hope to win in Malaysia to show why I got this seat!

Willy Weber – the team director – added that Mickael Ammermuller would probably not be selected only once since the team will need a second driver later in the season…

« I congratulate Michael on joining the team, he added. « We want to give him every chance to make his name on the international stage. »

« He has already started the physical preparation for his 2008 season in F3, and driving with us will be much more than just a training. »

Ammermuller experienced a gloomy season in 2007. A hand injury forced him to leave the GP2 championship prematurely, while in 2006, his position as a Red Bull F1 tester didn’t allow him to drive for the A1 Team Germany. This will be done in the near future…
