The British government supports Silverstone’s plans

Gerry Sutcliffe, the Sports Minister, expressed his support on Thursday at Silverstone. He intends to reorganize the F1 circuit and secure the British Grand Prix in the future.

« We want to see a British Grand Prix at Silverstone, and we will do everything we can to support this project, » he stated during a visit to the circuit.

He dismissed the idea of direct financial aid, however: “We cannot do that and we have not been asked to do so at this stage,” he told journalists.

« We have been invited to support sustainable development, which has many facets and which the government has decided to support in various creative ways. »

« Losing the British Grand Prix would be a huge blow and we do not want that, » he concluded.”

Bernie Ecclestone, the F1 boss, has threatened the circuit with removal from the official calendar. This unmissable event, which hosted the first Grand Prix in 1950, could disappear after the contract expires in 2009 unless improvements are made.

In July, construction plans for infrastructures are planned that include new stands, pit paddocks with new facilities, as well as a science park, hotels, and conference facilities. There will also be some new housing.

To be continued then…
