FIA modifies Hungaroring Turn 5 after Yuki Tsunoda’s accident
The Japanese driver ran violently off the track during the final qualifying session. The FIA removed an area of grass and replaced it with gravel for safety.
He gave us a good scare. During the third qualifying session, Yuki Tsunoda went off track in turn 5, this right-hand corner uphill before the chicane of the second sector. The Japanese driver took off on the grass area set up by the FIA on the sidelines of the Hungarian Grand Prix.
The VCARB went aground in the barrier then continued its course into the gravel trap at the next chicane. The driver emerged unscathed from the accident, but it raised questions about the safety of this turn.
The FIA then took hold of the problem and immediately took action. It removed about five meters of grass at the end of the area and replaced it with gravel. This should prevent any further similar incidents during the race.
Faced with the violent accident, Yuki Tsunoda’s single-seater car was largely destroyed. No engine parts were affected in the crash. The Japanese driver will not be penalized and will start from the tenth position on the grid.
