Niki Lauda’s burnt helmet up for auction
Bonhams will be auctioning Niki Lauda's legendary helmet. And it won't be just any helmet, but the one he crashed with in 1976.
A new collector’s item is set to change hands. During the Miami Grand Prix, an auction will be held by Bonhams. On Saturday, May 4, a particular item will be available for purchase.
Niki Lauda’s helmet, which he had during his accident in 1976 at the Nürburgring, will be up for sale. It is currently owned by a private collector. A portion of the proceeds from the sale will be donated to UNICEF, as the triple world champion’s family wishes. According to estimates, this legendary red helmet with the name of the former Ferrari driver, accompanied by the logos of Good Year, Romerquelle, and AGV, is expected to sell for between $50,000 and $60,000.

This helmet has entered the history of Formula 1. If it helped save Lauda, it also stood out for its lack of protection. After the Austrian’s accident, significant efforts were made in terms of safety in the sport. Lauda himself advocated for safer race car and circuit designs, leading to stricter controls on driving conditions and event organizers.
